President Christofias gives boost to Rotary scholarships
Aspelia Club fund supports 25 students
President Demetris Christofias has pledged 10,000 euros to the Rotary Club of Nicosia Aspelia Scholarship Fund, an institution that has supported 25 students in their undergraduate studies in Cyprus or abroad since it was established in 2001. Speaking at the performance of the UBS Verbier Quartet at the Presidential Palace on Friday, July 4, 2008, Club President Marianna Trokoudes announced that President Christofias had been impressed with the Club’ work and made the donation accordingly. She thanked First Lady Elsie Christofias who had placed the performance under her auspices, ensuring the event’s success with more than 250 people enjoying an evening of tango music by four young talented members of the world renown UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra – Eun Young Lee (South Korea), Asaf Maoz (Israel), Florentza Nicola (Romania) and Camila Pacifico (Brazil). In turn, Mrs Christofias said that “the President of the Republic of Cyprus supports the promotion of benevolent programmes and the organisation of charitable events which aim to improve the quality of life of our fellow citizens.” “I would like to remind you that the Presidential Palace will have its doors permanently open to all our people, as it belongs to all the people and represents them.” “Both the President and I will be at your side to help you achieve your goals,” Mrs Christofias concluded. The event was co-organised and sponsored by the UBS Cyprus Representative Office and supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Zorbas Catering.
